most people will go into these debates, if you like obama, you will think he did a debate job. romney has said that he wants to use the debates as a clarifying moment. he thinks the democrats have waged an inaccurate campaign. he has said he expects obama to tell more untruths on the debate stage but he thinks there is a real opportunity for him. there is congratulations from the romney campaign, what a great debater obama is and in some ways they are mediocre debaters. there have been some mistakes. obama is likeable enough moment with hillary clinton. gwen: think of the debates you have covered, chuck -- >> because i'm old. that said, the obama campaign knows these debates could be the only chance romney has left. so i have no doubt the president's been studying very carefully how to answer. what they're saying is they're trying to make sure the president is known for being a little long-winded. they want to make sure to keep him short and make sure his answers are tight. the other thing they have to avoid, romney was very good in the republican debates and he was very good at getting under the skin of rick perry and newt gingrich. that's something obama has to watch out for as well. >> erin, you've been in ohio. unemployment there is at 7.2% which is better than the national average. the president's leading in the latest polls there. so how concerned is the romney camp about that state, and what is their plan? >> there is some serious concern in the romney campaign and in republicans throughout ohio that president obama is in much better shape. they point to cleveland where there is a very heavy population base, manufacturing is big there and the auto bailout really did help industries up ther

the challenge for mitt romney going into this debate is not necessarily to get a hit in on barack obama, but better to communicate with the public why he's best positioned to help them. i think he's had some trouble with that throughout the campaign. i think the video that came out with him talking about 47% of the people being somewhat dependent upon the government, i think that hurt his ability to connect and say to folks i want to be president for all of america. i think he's got an opportunity in this first debate to communicate directly with the public. i won't give him advice, but i would just say i think that's a challenge for him right now. >> jonathan allen, thanks so much for joining us. >> my pleasure. >> look forward to having you back with us soon. >>> a former chemist at the massachusetts states drug lab was arrested friday. she's accused of faking drug test results. that's raising doubts about thousands of cases she handled, some of those convicted are already back on the streets and many more could be released from jail. she could face additional charges. elaine quijano
